Castlefield: Bridges, Waterways & More

A conservation area, an urban heritage park, site of a former roman fort and the end of the Bridgewater canal, which was the world’s first industrial canal. These are just a handful of the things we can touch on from history when we look at Castlefield.

Where Manchester came from:

Castlefield was the site of a Roman fort Mancunium which gave its name to the Manchester we all know and love.

The site today sits with a part rebuild of the roman fort and roman fort walls that can be experienced and enjoyed, stand for a moment and cast your mind to ancient times and how different this area would have been back then.  And how a city by any other name wouldn’t be the Manchester we have today.

What to see and do

Right at the heart of the action of Manchester waterways, Castlefield has some fantastic scenery of the locks, canals and bridges.  Stroll along towpaths to the side of industrial warehouses or sit in green spaces and enjoy the atmospheric surroundings.

Now you can see Castlefield from a height with the refurbished and resplendent Viaduct which is part of the National Trust’s portfolio, at the time of writing its free to visit and hosts actives such as Yoga and other events,

Castlefield is also home to the Museum Of Science and Industry (MOSI) which is well worth a visit, MOSI has a range of different floors, working displays and interactive things for kids too.
